The Wellness programs at Mt. Nittany Veterinary Hospital are designed specifically for your pet. Our wellness programs include:

• Comprehensive physical exam—A full head-to-tail examination in order to spot any abnormalities or early signs of potential health issues.
• Internal parasite testing—A fecal analysis.
• Heartworm and flea control—Heartworm is a mosquito-borne illness, which can be deadly if left untreated. We use a simple blood test to determine if your pet has the illness. Fleas cause skin irritation, and in some cases allergic reactions. In addition, fleas spread easily to other household members, both animal and human.
• Vaccination program—Preventing viral illness and bacterial infection is key to any wellness program. Please see our vaccination page for a complete listing of the vaccines we offer.
• Spaying and neutering—We recommend these procedures to eliminate or drastically reduce the risk of cancers in dogs and cats.
• Health monitoring blood tests—Blood work gives us a more complete picture of the overall health of your pet. These tests include blood cell counts and analysis, and clinical chemistries that help assess organ function and your pet’s general health. The type of blood test is specific to your pet’s stage of life.

For animals up to six years of age, we suggest an annual exam that includes:

• A full physical exam.
• A fecal analysis—To detect internal parasites. If you can, bring a stool sample in a clean container to this appointment.
• Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrlichiosis testing—Every three years if your pet receives heartworm preventative year round.
• Vaccines appropriate to your pet’s lifestyle and environment.

At the annual exam we also address such issues as the need for flea, tick, or heartworm preventatives.

When animals are older than six years, we suggest:

• A semi-annual physical exam.
• A fecal analysis—Your senior pet will appreciate it if you bring a stool sample in a clean container to this appointment.
• Vaccines appropriate for your senior pet.
• Annual blood work to check for metabolic diseases, such as kidney or liver disease, or diabetes.
